Physical Education (PE)

Our PE curriculum is built upon the foundation of children having a physical literacy, whereby children are given opportunities to develop their motivation, confidence, physical competence and the knowledge and understanding of how to continue to develop as an individual, way beyond their time at our school.  This is instilled from the very beginning of their time here at Priory Rise School and is developed as pupils move through the school.

PE is used across the school to promote health, mental health awareness and individuals’ well-being.  It is used as a tool to increase the children’s opportunities in order to develop a can-do attitude, promoting collaboration, tolerance and determination – instilling our values as a life choice.

The progression of skills taught is developed as the children move through the school and is broken down into each skills focus.  The planning for each year group builds upon the previous planning and teachers are able to adapt the lessons to suit the needs of specific groups such as gifted and talented or SEN and planning is adapted to suit specific cohorts and their needs.  Children are encouraged to try a range of sports and to build on their previous learning and experiences and to develop their own life-long passions. Our teachers have a flexible approach to the planning and delivery of lessons, in order to encompass the children’s experiences from out of school and to use these to enrich the learning within school, whilst also allowing children the opportunity to explore sports they may not otherwise have been able to.  Where necessary, specialist teachers are used to further enhance the children’s learning and progression in particular areas, such as dance.

By the end of Key Stage 1, we aim for pupils to develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.  Children are able to experience a range of activities including inter school competitions.

By the end of Key Stage 2, we aim for pupils to continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.  Children are encouraged to participate in a range of inter school competitions to consolidate this learning.

Children are asked to wear their PE kit to school on the days when they will have their PE or games lessons. It is the expectation that children continue to take great pride in wearing their PE uniform in the same way that they wear their standard school uniform.

  • Black plimsolls or suitable all-black trainers
  • Royal blue ‘Priory Rise’ logo hoodie or fleece
  • Grey or black jogging bottoms (not gym leggings)

For gymnastics lessons in the school hall, children work in bare feet and all watches must be removed. We ask that either children do not wear earrings to school on the days they have PE or that they cover them with a plaster or micropore tape brought from home. For safety reasons, long hair should be tied back, and children should bring a suitable band or hair tie from home for this purpose.
